All it takes is one moment to recognize a veteran and all they’ve done for this country.

At Angela Hospice, that moment happens again and again with their We Honor Veterans program, which recently reached a new milestone, achieving Level 4.

According to the National Hospice and Palliative Care Organization (NHPCO) reaching Level 4 means that you are providing the highest standard of care to your veterans, focusing on all the needs a veteran has, emotional and spiritual, and connecting them veteran to veteran. There’s a lot of focus on educating not only staff and volunteers, but the community as well.

“It’s a great, great honor,” said Teri Schmitchen, Angela Hospice’s Director of Integrative Therapies & Volunteer Services, and We Honor Veterans Chair. “I have a deep place in my heart for veterans and the respect that they deserve for the sacrifices that they’ve made.”

As does Angela Hospice, where their chapter of We Honor Veterans started almost a decade ago, spearheaded by volunteer John Stern, and his late wife, Lucy.

“It’s been a great honor to walk alongside him,” Schmitchen said.

While the group at Angela Hospice has reached Level 4, they’ll continue to do what they do best, make sure each veteran who comes on to Angela Hospice care is recognized in a culture that embodies respect and dignity for veterans.

Each veteran admitted to Angela Hospice’s care is offered a chance to be recognized with a We Honor Veterans pinning ceremony, where they receive two pins; a thank you letter, which is read aloud, along with a poem; and a blanket homemade by Angela Hospice volunteers. It’s a beautiful way to say thank you to those who aren’t always thanked for their service.

“The interaction with the veterans and their families and their loved ones… it still gives me goosebumps every time I do a pinning. It’s such a wonderful feeling,” said Stern, who is also an Air Force veteran. “It’s a wonderful opportunity for us to be able to thank veterans for their service.”

Since the inception of Angela Hospice’s We Honor Veterans program they have served thousands of veterans across all branches of the military.

On Veterans Day this year, Angela Hospice will be taking the extra step to make sure veterans feel cared for, appreciated, and acknowledged for all they’ve done. Veterans under Angela’s care will receive a gift bag, thank you note of appreciation, and patriotic socks to keep their feet warm throughout the upcoming winter.

We Honor Veterans is a program developed by NHPCO in cooperation with the Department of Veterans Affairs. Angela Hospice is currently working to achieve Level 5, something they hope to achieve in the next year.
