Average Daily Traffic

On March 23 when Gov. Whitmer issued a “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order, the pandemic-related shutdowns and restrictions caused rapid and dramatic changes in traffic volumes. Throughout the month of May, Gov. Whitmer lifted restrictions on certain businesses and industries.

According to Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), Detroit Region’s daily traffic volume increased by 7.3% to 1,424,238 in September 2021 compared to the previous year. MDOT’s Metro Region is made up of Oakland, Macomb, and Wayne counties. In September 2020 traffic volumes registered at 1.3 million, 13% decline from 2019.  MDOT measures traffic volumes by the total number of motor vehicles that crossed traffic counting sensors in each MDOT Region.
