$2.5M Grant to Support Hospitality Workers Impacted by COVID-19

September 22, 2020
The COVID-19 crisis has impacted many industries, especially the hospitality industry. With so many workers having hours cut or having temporarily or permanently lost their jobs, this significant sector of Michigan’s economy is struggling.

The Michigan Hospitality Industry Employee Relief Fund, a $2.5 million grant awarded to the Michigan Restaurant and Lodging Association (MRLA) by the Michigan Department of Treasury, will support the restaurant and lodging workers most affected by COVID-19. Approved applicants can receive payments of up to $500 until the grant’s funds have been depleted.

Justin Winslow, MRLA president and CEO shared with ClickOnDetroit, “More than half of the 600,000 hospitality workers in Michigan temporarily lost their jobs and too many restaurants across the state were unable to reopen after the shutdown.”

Applications for support are being accepted from Sept. 22 through Oct. 1 and must include proof of employment in the hospitality industry as of March 10.
