State Fairgrounds COVID-19 Test Site Moving to Detroit Neighborhood Rec Center

September 18, 2020
The City of Detroit will be moving its COVID-19 testing site at the former Michigan State Fairgrounds to the Joseph Walker Williams Recreation Center in Detroit’s Virginia Park neighborhood. The recreation center will be outfitted to provide an indoor testing location when the weather becomes too cold to continue with the current drive-through approach.

Aside from the seasonal change, another reason for this move is the proposed use of that property for a 3.8-million-square-foot Amazon.com Inc. distribution center. The proposal is still pending Detroit City Council approval.

It has not yet been announced when this indoor site will open. The Amazon facility developers hope to break ground at the end of October or early November, at which point the former state fairgrounds site would need to be vacated. In the meantime, testing is still available, though appointments are required. They can be scheduled by calling a Rock Connections-staffed call center at 313-230-0505.
