DSF Scholar Spotlight: Asila Taalib

asila taalibAsila Taalib, a second-year Detroit Scholarship Fund scholar at Henry Ford College (HFC), has carved at out a space for herself amid the bustling Dearborn campus, both as an Inside Track peer mentor and as a first-generation college student chasing her dream.

Taalib started at HFC in fall 2013, after graduating from University Preparatory Academy. Reflecting on the challenges of her first year, she cites a college success course that helped prepare her for the rigorous workload.

“Instructors don’t hold your hand. You have to learn how to prioritize. You have to learn how to be independent. It’s all on you,” she said.

As a peer mentor, Taalib works on campus helping first-year students through those same hurdles of transitioning to college life. She said she enjoys her leadership role and has future plans to transfer to Berkeley College of Music in Baltimore, Md. to pursue a career in the music industry.
