The Detroit Regional Chamber, in partnership with the National Center for the Middle Market (NCMM), is pleased to announce the Middle Market Council, the first organization in Michigan and a Chamber initiative that will be dedicated to the growth of Southeast Michigan’s middle market.

What is the Middle Market?

The middle market is defined by companies with annual revenues between $10 million and $2 billion, a very diverse segment of the economy that reaches across all industries and encompasses both privately and publicly held companies, family-owned businesses, partnerships and sole proprietorships. It is the fastest growing section of the nation’s economy, outpacing startups and large corporations.

Why Does the Middle Market Matter?Making up 30 percent of the region’s employment, the middle market matters. A strategic partnership with NCMM will bring national knowledge of middle market initiatives to the effort, helping the Chamber to better understand the needs of middle market firms and deliver valuable resources. With middle market businesses significantly contributing to the economy, this segment of Southeast Michigan has great potential for growth that will benefit the overall economy.

Research in Michigan indicates:

  • Detroit is a top 10 city for middle market firms
  • The middle market makes up 30 percent of total employment in Southeast Michigan
  • Michigan ranks fourth for middle market companies owned by women and minorities

Some other numbers regarding the middle market in the United States:

  • Contains one-third of all U.S. jobs
  • Nearly 33 percent of private sector GDP
  • More than $10 trillion in annual revenue
  • Nearly 48 million total jobs in 2014

How Does the Middle Market Council Help Middle Market Businesses?

The needs of middle market organizations differ from those of small businesses and larger corporate firms, and by being the first organization in Michigan to partner with the NCMM, the Chamber hopes to provide a unique value to this important sector.

Who is Eligible to Join the Council? 

The Council is designed exclusively for leaders of middle market businesses. In order to create a peer-to-peer environment, only executive level individuals in middle market businesses will be eligible to participate.

What Can People Expect From the Council?The Council will connect middle market companies with information that can help increase competitiveness. In addition, the Chamber will promote successes and accomplishments of the middle market sector. Major data reports and events will include:

  • Forums featuring national thought leaders on issues that are of significant importance to middle market businesses
  • Networking opportunities to provide middle market executives the opportunity to connect with peers throughout the region
  • Quarterly data that will report national trends
  • An annual summit for middle market businesses throughout Michigan

What is the National Center for the Middle Market (NCMM)?The National Center for the Middle Market provides knowledge, leadership and innovative research on the U.S. Middle Market.

Founded out of a multi-year partnership between GE Capital and Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business, the National Center for the Middle Market exists for a single purpose: serving as the foremost expert and leading resource on the U.S. middle market economy. In this capacity, the Center provides critical insights and analyses that drive growth, increase competitiveness, create jobs for the middle market, and, ultimately, the overall U.S. economy.
