Plante Moran Hosts Larger-Than-Life Artprize Portrait

Southfield, Mich., Sept. 16, 2013 – In its third year as a venue, Plante Moran’s Grand Rapids office is hosting a larger-than-life portrait by Paul Welch, a Traverse City, Mich. artist who works primarily with watercolor and stained glass, during the 2013 ArtPrize competition. Welch teaches art and art history and his work with Northwestern Michigan College and the Dennos Museum have been instrumental in creating a culture of the arts in Northern Michigan. This is Welch’s first time entering the ArtPrize competition.

According to Welch, his ArtPrize entry “Face to Face,” “signifies the importance of portraiture throughout the history of art.” The 24-foot by 24-foot work was silk-screened on a canvas that is designed to withstand weathering and high wind speeds and currently is handing outside the LEED-certified Plante Moran building overlooking the Grand River and Grand Rapids Fish Ladder Park.

“We are incredibly pleased to host an ArtPrize entry again this year and look forward to bringing the conversation across the river,” said Rich Antonini, managing partner of Plante Moran’s Grand Rapids office. “Our building is a perfect venue for Paul’s work, which comments on art and the artists that create it. We hope that ArtPrize visitors will have the opportunity to explore a new part of downtown when they cross the bridge and see ’Face to Face’ at Plante Moran.”

‘Face to Face’ “embodies the struggle of all art to define the meaning of self,” and is accompanied by a poem written by Welch:

“What does an artist face day to day, in his expressive race? He comes face to face with his Intuitive pace, in time and graphic space. The Artist finally finds thru oil and struggle his creative grace in a worldly planetary space.”

In its fifth year, ArtPrize, an international art competition in Grand Rapids decided solely on a public vote, runs Sept. 18-Oct. 6. Part art festival and part social dialogue, ArtPrize attracted submissions from more than 1,500 artists, and tens of thousands of supporters, globally.
