Social Media Day Detroit Continues Conversation, Provides Tips for Building Your Brand’s Digital Storytelling

The Detroit Regional Chamber partnered with the Social Media Association of Michigan for Social Media Day Detroit (#SMDAYDET), a day dedicated to social media and digital marketing in the Detroit region. Held June 30 at the Atheneum Suite Hotel in Greektown, the day was recently recognized by Gov. Rick Snyder as the official Social Media Day in the state of the Michigan.

Speakers included keynote Jason Falls, founder of Social Media Explorer; Amber Beard, social media recruiting strategist at Quicken Loans; Michelle Gilbert, vice president of public relations and social media at Comcast Heartland Region; Nicole Hudson, founder and owner of Inbound Lead Solutions; Nikki Little, social media director at Identity; and Eric Thomas, brand strategist and senior partner at Saga Marketing.

Speakers provided numerous tips and tricks for social media managers or business owners looking to improve their brand’s online image:

  • Humanizing your brand is important. It is easy to hate a brand or logo, but it is not so easy to hate a person.
  • Your employees are your biggest brand ambassadors. Brand messages shared by employees receive eight times more engagement than standard shares.
  • Content marketing is not about quantity – it is about which channels work best for your content and tailoring your style accordingly (i.e. a traditional blog post that would normally live on your company website should be styled differently if posted on your personal LinkedIn profile).
  • Use LinkedIn to share your story and build connections, which can ultimately turn into opportunities.
  • Instead of conducting market research through surveys and focus groups, go to where the conversations are really happening: on social media.
  • Social listening tools are great but still require a human to dig in and interpret the data.
  • Trust plus product equals selling. If you have the product but nobody trusts you, you will not sell anything.
