Lassiter, Tellem Make a Business Play for a Healthier Community

Henry Ford Health System and the Detroit Pistons proved partnerships and investment can empower communities with the opening of the long-awaited Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center in Detroit. In a one-on-one conversation at the 2020 Detroit Policy Conference, Henry Ford Health System President Wright L. Lassiter III and Detroit Pistons Vice Chairman Arn Tellem discussed this partnership and how it represents more than a business deal 

When Tellem arrived in Detroit in 2015, questions were swirling about the Pistons’ move to Detroit.  

“The vision was that if we moved downtown, I wanted to create a place not just for our players to train,” Tellem said. “We wanted to create partnerships that had a positive impact on the community…and set ourselves apart for how we contributed to Detroit’s rebirth.” 

Tellem wanted a practice facility that broke the mold of the usual private, walled-off facilities of the league and to share its cutting-edge resources with the surrounding community. This is evident in the Henry Ford Detroit Pistons Performance Center’s public access to healthy groceries, fitness activities and equipment, as well as entertainment space for gathering the community.  

Lassiter and the Henry Ford Health System team shared that same vision for their business, ensuring their work benefits their community beyond patient care.  

“This is a multi-layer partnership,” Lassiter said. “We don’t just focus on sports. We don’t just focus on winning and health care. We focus on trying to uplift the community as well.” 

These organizations’ investments in the city continue to foster ongoing improvements in the communities they inhabit through projects rooted in the longevity and sustainability of their results.  

A poignant symbol of this partnership and connectivity of sports, medicine, and community is the physical bridge that connects the two organizations’ buildings in Detroit.

Mobility Week to show off Detroit innovation

Detroit’s vision of trading in its moniker of the Motor City for the Mobility City is buoyed by several coordinated events through this week.

Mobility Week Detroit was set to kick off Sunday at Motor City Casino with the 8th World Research Congress on vision and driving, focusing on the impact of autonomous vehicles on health care and wellness. The event, which runs through Wednesday and is sponsored by Henry Ford Health System, will examine how physicians and scientists can aid in automotive design, how mobility influences medicine and more.

The week continues on Monday with a panel at the Detroit Regional Chamber on the rise of mobility as a service, featuring Elliot Darvick, general manager of the Michigan and Ohio market for Lyft; Mark de la Vergne, chief of mobility innovation for the city of Detroit; and Lisa Nuszkowski, founder and executive director of Detroit’s bike share MoGo.

The four-day CSforAll Summit, a national computer science education symposium, kicks off Monday at Wayne State University. Tuesday at the Detroit Film Theater will be Techstars Mobiliy Accelerator Demo Day, which is the largest single-day startup event in the state.

The 2018 MichAuto Summit, held Wednesday at The Beacon event space at One Woodward Avenue, is a daylong program featuring speakers from Ford Motor Co., Lyft, Inteva Products, Toyota North America and more.

The highlight of the week will be the two-day Detroit Moves Festival held in Spirit Plaza Oct. 10-11.

The free event, presented by the Quicken Loans Community Fund, will feature demonstrations by General Motors Co.’s Maven, Ford’s Chariot, May Mobility, MoGo, Airspace Experience Technologies and America’s Automotive Trust, and more.

“This isn’t just an industry show,” said Glenn Stevens, executive director of MichAuto and an organizer of the events. “We need to connect the public, consumers and industry together with these technologies.”

Crain’s Detroit Business is a sponsor of the event, and the Detroit Regional Chamber is helping produce it. Organizers expect around 1,000 people to attend the Detroit Moves event over the two days. Hundreds more are expected to attend the other events throughout the week.

American Society of Employers (ASE) announces job fair for veterans and individuals with disabilities on August 23 in Southfield

The American Society of Employers (ASE), one of the nation’s oldest and largest employer associations, will co-host a Veteran’s Job Fair on Thursday, August 23, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Southfield Pavilion. In addition, resume and interviewing workshops will be available starting at 8:00 a.m.

Joining ASE as co-hosts are the Michigan Industry Liaison Group (MILG), Detroit VA Healthcare System, Southfield Veterans’ Commission, Oakland County Michigan Works, and Michigan Rehabilitation Services. Ally and New Horizons are event sponsors. Chemical Bank, Cooper Standard, Federal Mogul, Henry Ford Health System, ITC, Kelly Services, and Logicalis are contributing sponsors.

The job fair is open to all, but is targeted to military veterans, individuals with disabilities, and their families. The event is free to both employers and job seekers.

Michigan Business Delegation Explores Israeli Startup Ecosystem, Cybersecurity Innovation

The Detroit Regional Chamber recently joined 15 organizations across the state for a five-day fact-finding mission on Israel’s booming startup culture and cyber innovation hosted by Deloitte and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.

The mission is part of an ongoing effort to build relationships with key government leaders in the country while also connecting Michigan companies with startups and business accelerators in order to develop collaborative technology solutions to strengthen the state’s leadership in connectivity and next-generation mobility.

In addition to the Chamber, the delegation included representatives from AT&T, ChoiceTel, Consumer Energy, Cornerstone Schools, Crain’s Detroit Business, Downtown Detroit Partnership, General Motors Co., Henry Ford Health System, ITC Holdings Corp., Michigan State Police and The Right Place.

Highlights from the week included:

  • Attending the 2017 CyberTech Conference in Tel Aviv to hear from industry experts in cybersecurity
  • Touring AT&T’s latest innovation center in Raanana, GM’s Advanced Technical Center in Tel Aviv and Israel’s Startup Nation Central, a nonprofit focused on getting innovation in front of leading companies around the world

Israel has the highest density of tech startups in the world cultivated by highly trained graduates from the military establishment, robust government investment in innovation and STEM education. That public and private synergy is ripe for entrepreneurial growth.

“It is very clear that Israel is a market Michigan must have a close relationship with not only because of the volume, but also the quality of innovation taking place. They have a culture that asks partners, ‘bring us your problems’ – and there are no shortage of challenges in delivering autonomous driving to the world,” said Justin Robinson, the Chamber’s vice president of business attraction.

“The Chamber and MICHauto are committed to further enhancing the connections between our established automotive industry and venture capital community with the technology ecosystem in Israel. Doing so will be a win-win for both of our communities,” he added.

Jeff DeGraff: Don’t Wait for the Next Best Thing to Pass You By, Innovate

“Innovation is a key ingredient for leaders to scale their business and sustain growth,” Jeff DeGraff, professor of business administration at the University of Michigan, said during his keynote address at the annual Middle Market CEO Summit.

“If you seek growth, innovation isn’t your best friend … it’s your only friend,” DeGraff said.

Drawing on examples from his past clients, such as Coca-Cola and Microsoft, the self-professed “dean of innovation,” said successful leaders are ones who understand the importance of:

  • Finding, developing and connecting the best people
  • Establishing a sustainable high-performing culture
  • Engaging a wide array of expertise and capability
  • Creating a collaborative learning environment

In order to accomplish those goals, oftentimes leaders must adopt a “prismatic” way of thinking, DeGraff said. The prismatic model divides innovation into four areas: collaborate, create, control and compete. Watch DeGraff’s presentation on prismatic thinking and how it can spark innovation.

Following the keynote, panelists John Fikany of Quicken Loans, Wright Lassiter III of Henry Ford Health System, and Paul Rogers, director of the U.S. Army’s Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) discussed how culture is driving innovation in their respective organizations.

“Two of the biggest issues in health care right now are preventable medical errors and the overall expense of care. Innovation is a way to solve both of these issues,” Lassiter said. “At Henry Ford we celebrate those who not only have the forethought for an idea, but also help to bring it to market.”

Pointing to the success of Henry Ford Health System’s patented Model G patient gown, Lassiter said innovation is often spawned by collaboration, adding that the hospital is currently working with a tech startup to redesign the traditional hospital bed.

Fikany said innovation is such a critical component of Quicken Loans’ success that the company gives employees a half-day weekly to follow their passion, which has led to the creation of numerous product ideas such as the high-speed internet service, Rocket Fiber, serving Detroit.

Wright Lassiter III is president of Henry Ford Health System. As president, Lassiter oversees all hospital and service operations for the five-hospital health system consisting of more than 60 clinical locations and more than 23,000 employees. A seasoned health care executive, Lassiter has more than 20 years of experience working in large health systems, including Methodist Health System in Dallas, and JPS Health Network in Fort Worth, Texas.

Lassiter previously worked at Alameda Health System in Oakland, Calif., where he is credited with leading the expansion and turnaround of the $865-million public health system. Students are fueling innovation at Henry Ford Innovation Institute

A tight focus on routine and procedure is critical to delivering quality health care. However, that focus can lead to the need for a fresh set of eyes to enhance the patient experience.

With that in mind, the Henry Ford Innovation Institute (HFII) invited students from the College for Creative Studies (CCS) to sit and watch the goings-on of operation and waiting rooms in hopes of capturing a new spark for the latest innovation.

“We brought the students in to actually see the procedures take place and walk through our simulation center and talk with our docs. It’s really interesting to get a fresh set of young people’s eyes that aren’t poisoned by the way things are always done. They can look at things very freshly,” said Mark Coticchia, chief innovation officer for Henry Ford Health System.

The location of the HFII allows for ease of collaboration with partners at CCS or Wayne State University. CCS students involved in the collaboration are enrolled in a Henry Ford sponsored class; during their time within the health care environment they are tasked with improving on existing processes or even helping to craft new procedures.

“They took us to a room and said ‘What can we do to make this room more comfortable for people; what can we do to make this experience easier?’ said Guercy Eugene, footwear designer and CCS student who spent a semester at HFII.

The partnership with CCS has led to several innovations including: a better patient gown that allows easier access and increased patient comfort, a system of intubation products to simplify the neonatal intubation process and a therapeutic cabinet that uses the principles of color and aroma therapy and feng shui to create a more holistic healing environment.

“One of my favorite days is going over and listening to the projects from students because if they come in with any sense of intimidation, they certainly shed themselves of that quickly as they go through the process. It’s one of those moments that you just enjoy because you’re listening to certain ideas and you give yourself permission to feel stupid and say ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’ and it’s a good thing,” said Robert Riney, president and chief operating officer of Henry Ford Health System.

Eugene’s work at the HFII found him designing a networked bracelet capable of monitoring patients’ biometrics, such as heart rate or blood pressure, as well as acting as a communication device between the wearer and doctors or nurses. He envisions his bracelet allowing patients who are not in immediate danger to be monitored from their own homes and avoid prolonged hospital stays.

Even as the experience at the HFII is enriching in and of itself, the exposure to the world of health care holds the potential to open doors down the line for students.

“It also rounds out the student’s experience because whether or not they are going into an entrepreneurial arena or whether or not they end up migrating into health care or whether or not they migrate to a traditional design role within the auto industry, the experience of really understanding the intersects between different industries is really invaluable to them,” Riney said.

As a direct result of the partnership, graduates from CCS have been hired on within the health system to assist with design sketches and rapid prototyping.

“As you move ideas through you need to develop a prototype, you need to do a university prototype, you need to do a commercial prototype, you need to get it into the marketplace, on and on and on,” Coticchia said.

Ecosystem for Medical Innovation

Launched in October 2012, the HFII is based at the Henry Ford Hospital New Center campus in Detroit. HFII’s operating philosophy is simple: Use innovation to improve health care and the patient experience. The Institute is organized as an independent scientific research and educational entity, allowing it to operate flexibly and rapidly.

HFII provides a forum where physicians, engineers, designers, artists, scientists, educators and business gurus come together to collaborate and create change to improve the delivery of health care and the health residents throughout the region.

“One of the things that we anticipated when we launched the Innovation Institute was that we were going to have an opportunity to be a convener of many different stakeholders that all have energy and interest around innovation and that we’d be able to create a multitude of paths moving forward for the innovation space and that has proven to be true,” Riney said.

With approximately 1,200 physicians and researchers in more than 40 specialties, the Henry Ford Medical Group is already a major innovator in the field. However, HFII provides stimulus and seed resources for multi-industry teams to jumpstart development of new medical devices, products and therapies. More than 30 projects are in process at HFII, including innovations in technology and procedures for treating congestive heart failure, diagnosing and treating cancer and applying radiation to tumors.

“I think we underestimated how much pent up interest there is in creative ways to bring what might be considered nontraditional partners to the table and create innovation that not only improves processes that are used in our organization or improves products that are used in our organization — but in some cases it can help create a path forward for the entrepreneur in terms of an economic catalyst for the region,” Riney said.

Even as students ply their eye for design, National Institute of Health scientists are exploring advances in cancer detection and treatment. While this leading-edge research hums with the promise of tomorrow, Henry Ford executives are also enthused about the institute’s ancillary benefits.

“Part of a byproduct of this Innovation Institute is unleashing the innovation DNA through all levels of the organization. It’s interesting how a housekeeper can read about what we are doing with the creation of this Innovation Institute and all of a sudden go to their front-line manager with a very creative idea on how to improve process in their own area that they might not have felt empowered to do until they saw our focus and our desire to enhance that whole innovative experience,” Riney said.

Taking a true big picture approach, Riney sees the HFII and similar efforts as being integral pieces of a rebuilt and diversified economy in the region strengthened by the cohesive, innovative approach.

“We [can] create economic activity by these partnerships [which can] create jobs in Southeastern Michigan that are particularly attractive to the young professionals that will define our urban environments across the country going forward,” Riney said.
