What “Medicare for All” Means for Employers and Patients

When it comes to health care, the Detroit Regional Chamber believes businesses and individuals should have access to options. Quality, affordable, and convenient health care is key to ensuring the wellness and productivity of employees. As the 2020 presidential campaign heats up, many candidates are discussing their opinion on “Medicare for All.”


What You Need to Know

Employees currently have more choice and control than anywhere else in the world when it comes to coverage, doctors, and treatments. Health care decisions should be made by patients and their doctors – not politicians and bureaucrats. Whether it is called “Medicare for All,” buy-in, or a public option, one-size-fits-all health care will never allow us to lower costs, enhance quality, and foster innovation.

An expansion of “Medicare for All” will create a one-size-fits-all government health care system resulting in higher taxes, lower quality and politicians in control of health care.  New government insurance systems will force your employees to pay more to wait longer for worse care.



  • Health care costs are too high.
  • Independent analysts estimate the cost of some one-size-fits-all proposals could be as high as $60 trillion over 10 years.
  • A government insurance system will result in higher taxes for all Americans and higher private plan premiums.
  • Some studies show “Medicare for All” could results in the equivalent of tripling payroll taxes or more than double all other taxes.
  • “Medicare for All” will not lower costs for every American, nor will it build on what is working and fix what is broken.
  • Medicare is already at risk. The government’s existing commitment to Medicare must be honored to fix and improve the system before it can be expanded.

Current Options

In Michigan and across the nation, we have put in place proven successful strategies to expand health care coverage.

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) features the expansion of health coverage through Medicaid in 38 states, including Michigan. Under the ACA, health care options are offered to workers in low-wage jobs that do not offer health insurance. The ACA has recently expanded to include the ability for children to stay on their parents’ plan through age 26, eliminating denied coverage for a pre-existing condition, and The Healthy Michigan Plan, Michigan’s expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

The Healthy Michigan Plan provides benefits to low-income Michigan residents at a low cost so that more people can have health care coverage. This plan covers over 650,000 Michigan residents and has reduced the state’s medical costs since launching in 2014.
