Joshua Sapotichne

Associate Professor, Michigan State University

Joshua Sapotichne is an associate professor in Michigan State University’s (MSU) Department of Political Science and a faculty affiliate of MSU Extension’s Center for Local Government Finance and Policy.  He researches and teaches in the areas of fiscal federalism, federal and state government approaches to urban policies, and city policy innovation.

Sapotichne has served as co-principal investigator on two Charles Stewart (C.S.) Mott Foundation-funded projects on Michigan’s involvement and intervention in fiscally distressed communities and has been the recipient of several national awards for outstanding scholarship in the fields of urban politics and public policy, including the Norton Long Young Scholar and Stone Scholar awards, and the Theodore J. Lowi award for best article in Policy Studies Journal.

His research and policy work has been covered in The Atlantic, Bloomberg, Bridge Magazine, The Christian Science Monitor, Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, Fortune, Michigan Public Radio and The New York Times.
