Good Health is Good for Business

Healthy communities achieve improved education outcomes, attract talented workers, and are more productive and competitive. To drive economic prosperity, the Chamber developed initiatives that will help reshape regional communities into healthier, more productive places to live, work, and play.

How Is a Community’s Well-Being Measured?

The Gallup Sharecare Well-Being Index is a nationally recognized database that measures Americans’ perceptions of their lives through five elements: physical health, financial security, relationship to community, sense of purpose, and social relationships. The Chamber is using this index to guide business and community initiatives toward improving health outcomes in Southeast Michigan.

How Does Well-Being Impact Business?

Poor employee and community well-being creates a cascade of economic challenges that affect businesses:

  • Wage compression: Resources are diverted to benefit costs rather than wage increases.
  • Higher health care costs: Employees and their families have less disposable income and participate less in consumer-driven economic activity.
  • Government resources: Instead of funding business priorities, including education and infrastructure, resources are diverted to meet higher demand for health care services. The substitution of government investments in health care over investments in education and infrastructure suppress overall business growth and profitability.
  • Profitability: Decreases and suppresses business growth.

Regional leaders have opportunity to contribute to improved health outcomes in Southeast Michigan. Join the mission of creating healthier workplaces and communities today.
