The fractured relationship between Whitmer and Republican legislators has stoked some alarm among business leaders across the state that 2021 could be marked by stalemate and standoffs.
“2020 was a rough year for the governor and the legislative leadership and it certainly doesn’t look 2021 is starting out any better,” said Sandy Baruah, CEO of the Detroit Regional Chamber. “We worry about that. I mean, functioning government is something businesses have come to value over the last 240 years.”
