Through discussions of politics, community and leadership, the Power Perspectives delivered at the 2018 Detroit Policy Conference shined a light on how Detroit can cultivate civility so that everyone benefits from the city’s ongoing revitalization. The Power Perspectives were sponsored by Grand Valley State University

Michigan state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-District 15) said understanding someone’s story and background is more impactful than focusing on their title. During a Power Perspective, Hammoud said a willingness to look beyond someone’s partisan ideology is the first step in creating progress and policies that benefit all.

Misha Stallworth, board secretary for Detroit Public Schools Community District, discusses leaders’ responsibility to be transparent with the public and the steps she has taken to engage with parents in the school district during a Power Perspective.

Lisa Lunsford, CEO and co-founder of Global Strategic Supply Solutions, discusses how establishing a clear identity, shedding biases, and being inclusive is crucial for leaders to lead effectively.

Prince Concepts President Philip Kafka says business is just an average practice without civility during a Power Perspective. Drawing on his signature projects, Takoi restaurant and the True North living community, Kafka says civility demands toughness and sensitivity, and Detroit demands sensitivity in business.

Marlowe Stoudamire, founder of Butterfly Effect Detroit, discusses the importance of developing trust between the people of Detroit to tell an authentic, unified story of the city’s continued comeback during a Power Perspective.
