Know Before You Vote: Key Information for Michigan’s 2022 General Election

Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022, is general election day in Michigan, and it’s essential to be prepared for election season and exercise your right to vote.

This election has various key races with many seats in the Michigan State Senate and House of Representatives, the biggest being Michigan’s executive offices of governor and Secretary of State and the 13th Congressional House. Further, Michigan residents will decide the fate of three statewide ballot proposals.

Important Dates and Deadlines

Ahead of election day, it’s important to check if you’re registered to vote, determine your preferred voting method, locate your polling place, and research information about the candidates and proposals on the ballot. This information can be found on the Michigan Voter Information Center’s website, but some key details are outlined below.

Voter Registration Deadlines

Michigan residents can register to vote online, by mail, or in person on election day.

  • Online: Monday, Oct. 24.
  • By mail: Postmarked by Monday, Oct. 24.
  • In person on election day: Through Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m.

Absentee Ballot Deadlines

All registered voters in Michigan can vote using an absentee ballot, regardless of reason. Apply for yours here.

  • Request ballot: By Friday, Nov. 4, at 5 p.m.
  • Return ballot by mail to avoid mailing delays: By Monday, Oct. 24.
  • Return ballot in person at local clerk’s office or designated drop box: By Tuesday, Nov. 8, at 8 p.m.

Voting Deadlines

On election day, polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

  • Early voting (in-person absentee voting): Began Thursday, Sept. 29, and varies by location.
  • In-person voting: On Tuesday, Nov. 8, from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
